"Love living on an island": Emigrant is surprised by low costs

American Phoebe Merrick originally planned to spend just one summer on Waiheke Island in New Zealand. She has since emigrated there.
Phoebe Merrick has lived on Waiheke Island, also known as the "Hamptons of New Zealand," for two years. Originally, the American only planned to spend one summer there, but then she fell in love and decided to stay. Love, the scenery, and the lifestyle convinced Merrick to settle there.
"When I came here, I felt like a millionaire," Merrick told CNBC . Thanks to the strong U.S. dollar against the New Zealand dollar, she had more of her savings.
Merrick now works as a freelance marketing manager, and her partner is a self-employed plumber. Together, they earn approximately $132,000 (approximately €114,000) a year and enjoy the quiet island life.
Despite the challenges, like driving on the other side of the road and the lack of delivery services, she doesn't regret the big move. "I love living on an island," says Merrick.
After the attack, Kat returned to the UK. She describes the loss of her husband, her home, and her job as devastating: "That night, I lost everything."
Spain follows in fourth place, the USA in third, and neighboring Austria in second. The most popular destination for German emigrants is Switzerland. In 2023, a total of 316,000 Germans lived there. Last year alone, 20,973 Germans arrived. The number of Germans living in Switzerland has been increasing for years.
